Strategies to Communicate with an Anxious Child

Are your children scared of certain objects or particular situations? For example, they may fear being on stage or ghosts lurking under their bed. This fear may not cause any potential threat but prevents them from doing things they love. Help them cope with anxiety using the pointers below.

  • Acknowledge and Validate Their Feelings

When your child expresses fear of something, respond by validating their feelings and avoid saying things like, “Oh, it’s not a big deal.” If you are worried about your child’s anxiety, counseling services may help you understand the right coping strategies. Be sure to acknowledge your child’s fear and address it the best way you can.

  • Recognize and Tackle Negative Thoughts

Children, like adults, are prone to negative thinking, too. Negative thinking affects your child’s self-esteem and causes heightened anxiety. To counter negative thinking, help them identify negative thoughts and cultivate positive thinking. Mental health experts that offer counseling, substance abuse counseling in Ohio, and other mental health services can help your kids.

  • Try to Practice Deep Breathing

According to research, slow, deep breathing can help curb symptoms of both depression and anxiety. Teach your child how to calm their body through simple breathing exercises. If your kids need assistance from a professional, telehealth therapy is a convenient way to help them.
